Il Giardino di Tony - Beanne Hull
Il Giardino di Tony
Beanne Hull, Civita Institute Advanced Career Fellow, 2020
I set out broadly to examine the origins and customs of all things food-related in Civita di Bagnoregio. I imagined I would start with the local restaurants but it took me no time at all to realize that the unique kitchen garden beloved by friends and neighbors of the Institute and fondly known to all as Tony’s Garden was exactly where I wanted to be.
Suspended in space and time, tucked away from the tourists, I sharpened my focus to watch and describe the garden in drawings, paintings, photographs and writing. From its unique physical attributes, perched above the chestnut grove far below, voluptuous vegetables and fruits, brilliant views, the Etruscan cave a few meters below the surface of the well-worn soil, to the nature of generosity, sustainability and - perhaps most interesting - the timeless philosophical lessons to be found in tending a kitchen garden.
