The Cultural Landscape of Civita di Bagnoregio Fellowship, offered for the first time in 2023, will activate criteria underlying the candidacy of the Cultural Landscape of Civita di Bagnoregio as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site. For historical background, please visit UNESCO.
Fellowship applications and proposals may be submitted by either an American or an Italian but the materials must be in English. Fellowship products must also be submitted in English; translation services as provided by the applicant or Fellow may be utilized.
The Fellowship will be awarded to either an American or an Italian applicant with demonstrated expertise as an architect, engineer, or scientist and knowledgeable in any or all of the following criteria as identified by the UNESCO nominating committee of Regione Lazio, the Comune di Bagnoregio, and Casa Civita. It is anticipated that the chosen Fellow will conduct research, analysis, and propose techniques for the benefit of resolving one or more of the five criteria underlying the UNESCO-candidacy. The Civita Institute is particularly interested in proposals, big or small, addressing stabilization of the geomorphology of Civita di Bagnoregio in response to the proposed criteria:
1) Strong geomorphological activity
2) Antifragility of the urban-architectural features
3) Temporal continuity of hydrogeological risk mitigation of actions from natural hazard
4) Iconic value
5) Resilience of community
The Cultural Landscape of Civita di Bagnoregio Fellow, either American or Italian, will receive a one-month stay in the facilities of the Civita Institute in Civita di Bagnoregio and a stipend of approximately $1,750.00. The Fellowship award will be recommended by an independent jury of qualified peers. The Board of Directors will be responsible for final selection.
